Occasionally I will hear it reported that supplementing with vitamins and minerals is a waste of money however, the nutrient content of the food we buy from the supermarket today is less than that produced 50 years ago. A landmark study of nutritional data found consistent declines in protein, calcium, iron, vitamin B2 and vitamin C in 2004 compared to 1950. The study also comments that declines in magnesium, zinc, Vitamin B6 and E are likely however this needs further study. Australian soils are also deficient in iodine that is necessary for healthy thyroid function.
The reason for the decline in these key nutrients is due to soil depletion in intensive agriculture designed to mass produce food with chemical fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides. This food is then further processed into synthetic junk food. Even fresh vegetables and fruit are more depleted of nutrients from long storage methods.
Organic produce grown in healthy soil are the best way to maximise your nutrients. While conventionally grown fruit and vegetables aren’t as nutrient dense as they once were, they are still contain many beneficial nutrients and phytochemicals.
Fatigue, bone loss, blood sugar imbalance, decreased immune function, depression and anxiety are just a few examples of conditions that can be created or worsened from eating nutritionally depleted foods.
Learn how to optimise your nutrient intake to increase energy and feel alive; to increase bone density, balance blood sugar, to reduce illness and feel happier and calmer.
